Mental Health Q&A

How do I know if I need mental health treatment?

Mental health concerns aren’t always obvious, even to yourself. That’s why it’s important to look out for signs that may indicate you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health problem. A few common signs of mental health concerns include:

  • Feeling tired (fatigue)
  • Poor concentration
  • Feeling low or hopeless
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Losing your sense of control
  • Change in sleep (too much or too little)
  • Difficulty getting out of bed in the morning (or anytime)
  • Pulling away from family or friends
  • Poor performance at work or school
  • Forgetfulness
  • Changes in eating habits

A few different types of mental health issues:

Anxiety

Can show up as persistent feelings of worry, fear, or nervousness. Anxiety is a common mental health issue that can affect a person at any age. Often anxiety is triggered by an event but can also be caused by underlying medical issues such as hypothyroidism, low vitamin B12 or a genetic predisposition. There are multiple types of anxiety from general anxiety to social anxiety.

Depression

Depression is a common mental health disorder that causes feelings of sadness or hopelessness. The signs may be subtle or apparent; everybody experiences depression differently. Some people experience constant feelings of sadness, others simply feel persistent fatigue.

ADHD

ADHD, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a mental health condition that causes long-term difficulties with concentration, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. While many people associate ADHD with children, symptoms can last well into adulthood. It's not all bad! The ADHD/ADD brain usually comes with high intelligence (including higher than average IQ), easy to lead others, entrepreneurship and creative thinking. It's a problem when it impedes someone from finishing tasks/projects including forming and keeping human relationships.

What are the treatments for mental health disorders?

There are many options and should be individualized:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Lifestyle modifications
  • Diet (nutrition)
  • Stress reduction techniques
  • IV infusion therapy
  • Supplements/vitamins
  • Exercise
  • Medication
